I have never understood why people want to visit such a miserable place.

Auschwitz is a museum. Don't eat a ham sandwich in the gas chamber as I did - it's frowned upon

Birkenau is the real deal. Don't pretend to defecate on a toilet in one of the barracks - that's also frowned upon.

Bar that, it's a fascinating and haunting place. And best of all, Krakow isn't far away if you fancy rounding off the day with a cheap brass.

I've never been but I've always wondered if there's a gift shop and if there is, what do they sell in it?

Maybe you can report back?

Enjoy Kraków - if architecture floats your boat, you won’t see a better Renaissance town square outside Tuscany. I’ve never been to Auschwitz but I have been to Treblinka and as I said to Piggy back in the day, there’s no point if you don’t consider the political context.

Pickle... I thought the camp at Treblinka was totally and utterly broken down ... nothing there I thought??

Sorry - Majdanek was the one I visited. Massive great big pile of human ash makes an impression.

Re: Leonard Hatred at Auschwitz
Sachsenhausen was depressing enough for me, and it was only a concentration camp, not an extermination camp.

Although they did kill people there, herding them into a narrow concrete passage and machine gunning them there.

Re: Leonard Hatred at Auschwitz
Both camps are quite eerie for differing reasons.

We had a good tip while there at the larger camp which was to start at the very back of the camp (Gas chambers) and work your way to the front avoiding crowds doing it the proper way through the main entrance.

Re: Leonard Hatred at Auschwitz
As if these places weren't depressing enough, there's a flourishing movement (backed by law/potential law) that Poland is blameless for the Holocaust and failing that, it didn't really happen or was more like 600,000 than 6,000,000 or was mainly Jews killing Jews. Such sentiment is to lesser or greater degree, beginning to be replicated in neighbouring countries.

The awful reality is that among the incredibly brave people that hid Jews or made other sacrifice at great personal risk, by and large local populations (including liberal countries like Holland and Denmark but especially in the East), readily gave up their Jewish erstwhile neighbours to the Nazis. Indeed the Nazis were often the local populace.

The human stain

It was Nazi Germany not occupied Poland or any occupied nation for that.

Leonard - I went in September 2017 when it was really hot.. Definitely worth doing. I assume you're going back to Krakow after? Make sure you go to a place called The Beer House in the old town. It is well worth a visit as I know you like getting wankered. Immensely strong beers!!! You will love it. Enjoy

Went late last year. Then read a book called forgotten voices of the Holocaust. The book was fucking harrowing, but after having visited the place, it brings it all home.

There is a shop, but it just sells books and DVDs.

There's no snow globes or "my parents went to Auschwitz and all I got was this lousy t shirt" or owt like that.
